Promontoire naturel de schiste découpé par les vallées du Torteron, de la Dollée et de la Vire, le rocher permet de contrôler ce point de rencontre stratégique de plusieurs routes ainsi que d’un fleuve navigable.
L’on attribue à Charlemagne, lors de sa venue dans la région en l’an 800, les premières fortifications afin de protéger la ville des invasions normandes.
